Washington: The White House has criticised so-called ‘sanctuary policies’ and urged stronger cooperation from state and local governments in enforcing federal immigration laws. Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt stated that President Donald Trump demands more robust support from state and local administrations to uphold immigration laws effectively.
During a White House briefing, Carolyn Leavitt described opposition by state and local authorities to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a direct threat to public safety. She accused Democratic leaders in Minnesota of openly disregarding federal immigration laws and obstructing federal officials from performing their duties.
Leavitt revealed that President Trump spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and presented three straightforward and reasonable points for cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement agencies. These include handing over illegal immigrants arrested by local police, transferring individuals with criminal records into custody, and allowing officials to carry out their work without interruptions.
The press secretary emphasised that such cooperation is common in most states. She warned that failure to comply has tragically resulted in loss of lives in Minnesota. According to Leavitt, the President is appealing to Congress to pass legislation that would permanently end ‘sanctuary cities.’
Leavitt acknowledged Americans’ constitutional right to protest but clarified that they do not have the right to interfere with lawful immigration enforcement operations. She described such actions as criminal, noting that they endanger the lives of enforcement officers.
Defending the administration’s immigration strategy, Carolyn Leavitt said President Trump is committed to deporting the most dangerous criminal foreigners. She highlighted recent arrests by ICE of offenders involved in assault, domestic violence, fraud, and drunk driving.
Addressing concerns about civil liberties, Leavitt stated that the President supports the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens but warned that carrying weapons during encounters with law enforcement increases the risk of deadly outcomes.
This issue has come to the forefront as Democrat-controlled states and cities challenge federal authority. The Trump administration has made cooperation with ICE a central part of its local security agenda.
