New Delhi, August 1: West Indies captain Roston Chase is thrilled with his team’s recent performance and aims to transform their home grounds into ‘impenetrable fortresses’ where defeating the Caribbean team becomes a daunting task. The second Test match between West Indies and Pakistan is set to take place this Sunday.
After winning the Test series against Sri Lanka, West Indies triumphed over Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test on home soil. The team currently leads the two-match series 1-0. Chase expressed to reporters, “We feel very happy and fortunate with the results we’ve achieved at home. However, I want to make our home grounds like a fortress, where it is very difficult for other teams to beat us.”
The Caribbean captain stated, “These are our own conditions; we know them well and understand them better than the opposing team. That’s why I believe we want to take full advantage of our home conditions, and so far, we have been doing well. As I mentioned, we are fortunate to maintain our good form, and we aim to secure a win in this second match as well.”
A victory in the upcoming match at Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval will help West Indies surpass England and climb to seventh place in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.
Chase added, “After last year, we sat down to devise a plan and decided where we wanted to be. As I said, we are right where we aimed to be. However, we want to do even better. We don’t want to take anything lightly in the second Test and just want to follow the processes we discussed. We aim to implement them to the best of our ability and achieve a second victory.”
West Indies’ confidence has surged due to Pakistan’s ongoing struggles on foreign soil. The visiting team has faced defeats in eight consecutive Test matches away from home against Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, and now the Caribbean. However, the pitch in Port of Spain is expected to offer significant assistance to spin bowlers.
The spin bowling department for West Indies will be led by left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, while Chase is recovering from a finger injury that prevented him from bowling off-spin in the first Test. The team also includes left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, but Chase is hopeful about bowling in the upcoming match. He stated, “It is improving. I hope to be ready to bowl by Sunday. I bowled two overs today. There is still some pain, but I believe I will be able to bowl at least four to five overs continuously by Sunday.”
