West Bengal Election Commission Urges Citizens to Maintain Law and Order During Counting

Kolkata, May 4: The Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, Manoj Agarwal, has urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands during the election counting process. He emphasized that in a democratic system, elections should be treated like a festival, similar to Durga Puja.

In a press conference, Agarwal encouraged the public to participate in the voting process in large numbers. He highlighted that the Election Commission had taken significant measures to ensure security throughout the election period. A substantial number of security personnel were deployed at sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incidents during the electoral process. Agarwal also appealed to citizens to avoid engaging in any violent activities, reinforcing that elections are a celebratory event.

He stated that the Election Commission had made every effort to ensure a smooth electoral process in West Bengal. A comprehensive plan was established to address potential issues, and citizens were reminded not to disrupt law and order. Elections come and go, and participation should be enthusiastic, akin to a festival.

Typically, West Bengal conducts assembly elections in six to seven phases. However, this year, the elections were held in just two phases. Agarwal explained that they were prepared to conduct the elections in a single phase but had to adhere to certain regulations, which led to the decision for two phases. He expressed confidence that future elections in the state would return to a single-phase format.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has indicated that they will demand re-polling in areas where fewer than 1,000 votes are cast. In response, Agarwal clarified that there would be no re-polling; instead, a recounting process would be implemented as per the established procedures. He assured that if the current circumstances warranted a recount, appropriate actions would be taken, and the Election Commission is fully informed about the situation.
