Weather Improves in Jammu and Kashmir with Snow Forecasts

Srinagar, February 3: The weather in Jammu and Kashmir has shown improvement, with both maximum and minimum temperatures rising on Tuesday. The lowest temperature recorded in Srinagar was 2.8 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg Ski Resort experienced a chill of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius.

Weather department officials reported that a weak western disturbance is currently active in the Union Territory. This may lead to cloudy skies and the possibility of rain and snowfall in various regions.

From February 2 to the evening of February 6, partial cloud cover is expected. Light snowfall is likely in higher altitudes on February 7. Generally dry weather is anticipated on February 8, followed by light rain and snowfall in some areas on February 9 and 10.

On Monday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 9.8 degrees Celsius, while Jammu reached 21.8 degrees. On Tuesday, the minimum temperatures were recorded at 2.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, minus 5.3 in Gulmarg, and minus 0.4 in Pahalgam.

In Jammu city, the minimum temperature was 9 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 8.1, Batote at 4.1, Banihal at 1.5, and Bhaderwah at 0.8 degrees. With the end of the 40-day harsh winter period known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan’ on January 30, there has been an overall improvement in temperatures. This suggests a low likelihood of fresh snowfall in the valley’s plains this winter.

Significant snowfall at the end of January has ensured that rivers, streams, springs, and lakes will retain water during the upcoming warmer months. A surge of domestic tourists is currently visiting the valley, with high booking rates in hotels across Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam.

Those connected to the tourism industry view this as a very positive sign, as a strong start can mean half the work is done. This resurgence is crucial for Kashmir’s tourism sector, which is recovering from the severe blow dealt by the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 last year, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, including 25 tourists and a local pony owner.
