Sant Kabir Nagar, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Tensions escalated in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, during the Ganesh Visarjan procession on September 18, involving local Samajwadi Party MP Lakshmikant Nishad, also known as Pappu Nishad. The incident occurred at Amar Dobha Chowk, where a dispute broke out between the MP’s convoy and participants of the procession, resulting in damage to the MP’s vehicle.
In response to the incident, police registered a case based on a complaint from the MP, targeting those involved in the procession. Additionally, a complaint filed by participant Vishal Kumar led to charges against the MP and several others, including district panchayat member Vishwaketu Yadav.
Authorities are currently investigating both complaints and examining the roles of officials and security personnel present at the scene, as well as reviewing video footage of the event. According to MP Nishad, he was returning to his residence around 10:30 PM when the procession was passing by. He claims that, with police assistance, his convoy was attempting to navigate through the crowd when some individuals began throwing stones and attacking the vehicles with sticks.
Nishad reported that his vehicle was damaged but that he and his supporters were able to reach safety. He has requested the police to identify and take legal action against those responsible for the attack.
Conversely, Vishal Kumar, a resident of Santoshpur, accused the MP and his supporters of serious misconduct in his complaint filed on September 20. He described how the procession halted due to a malfunctioning DJ generator, leading to a confrontation between the DJ operator and procession participants.
Vishal alleges that as Nishad’s vehicles, with sirens blaring, attempted to pass through the crowd, he was struck and fell to the ground, injuring his lower back. He claims that when he protested, he faced verbal abuse and physical assault from the MP’s supporters. During this altercation, some individuals from the procession reportedly threw stones at the MP’s vehicle, breaking its window.
The situation escalated into mutual stone-throwing, resulting in injuries and damage to vehicles. Vishal has demanded action against the MP and his supporters, alleging threats and attempts to incite violence. The police have registered cases based on both complaints, including references to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Investigations are ongoing, with police examining video evidence and statements from witnesses. Local discussions regarding the incident have intensified, and authorities have stated that further actions will depend on the findings of the investigation.
