Chennai, May 9: Actor-politician and leader of the Tamilga Vetria Kazhagam (TVK), C. Joseph Vijay, has formally claimed to form the government in Tamil Nadu after securing support from several opposition parties. His coalition now surpasses the majority threshold in the 234-member assembly.
Vijay met with Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai, where he submitted letters of support from allied parties and independent backers.
This development comes amid intense political uncertainty following the fractured mandate from the assembly elections held on April 23, with results announced on May 4.
Sources indicate that the governor is expected to formally invite Vijay to form the government either late Friday evening or Saturday morning. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place at 11 AM on Saturday in Chennai.
In the assembly elections, TVK emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats. However, initially, the party fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member house.
The Congress party was the first to extend support to Vijay, with five newly elected legislators backing the TVK leader.
On Friday evening, the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also formally announced their support for Vijay’s bid to form the government.
Each of these four parties has two legislators in the new assembly, bringing Vijay’s total strength to 120 members, which is above the simple majority.
After meeting with the governor, Vijay visited the CPI’s state headquarters in Chennai to personally thank the leftist party leaders for their support in his government formation efforts. Leaders from the supporting parties indicated that their backing was aimed at ensuring political stability in the state and preventing prolonged uncertainty.
Meanwhile, Vijay will need to resign from one of the two assembly constituencies from which he was elected, in accordance with election commission rules that prohibit an individual from holding two seats simultaneously.
These dramatic political developments mark a historic moment in Tamil Nadu’s politics, with Vijay poised to become the state’s next Chief Minister less than a year after formally entering electoral politics with his party.
