Chennai, March 17: Film star turned politician Vijay has made a significant move in Tamil Nadu politics by announcing that his party, Tamilga Vettir Kazhagam (TVK), will contest the upcoming assembly elections independently. He has completely dismissed any speculation regarding an alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This decision has stirred the political landscape in the state.
During a meeting with party leaders in Pattinapakkam, Vijay confidently stated that his party is not in talks for any alliances with other parties. He urged his workers to intensify grassroots efforts in their respective areas, as the candidate list will be released soon. Vijay also mentioned that he will personally tour Tamil Nadu to strengthen the party.
Recently, there had been discussions suggesting that negotiations between TVK and NDA had progressed significantly. Political analysts believed that such an alliance could have led to a three-way contest in the elections. However, ideological differences and disagreements over leadership caused the talks to collapse.
Sources indicate that the BJP had offered TVK approximately 60 seats along with the position of Deputy Chief Minister. In response, TVK proposed a power-sharing formula where Vijay would serve as Chief Minister for the first half of the term. This proposal was not accepted by the AIADMK leadership, particularly Edappadi K. Palaniswami, leading to the breakdown of negotiations.
It is now anticipated that Tamil Nadu will witness a tough four-cornered electoral battle. On one side will be the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance, while the AIADMK and BJP will form another front. Vijay’s TVK will stand independently, and the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) is also preparing to contest alone.
TVK has begun finalizing its candidates, with reports suggesting that names for around 60 seats have already been decided. The complete list and manifesto will be announced soon. Vijay is expected to contest from the Perambur seat in Chennai, while prominent leaders like Adhav Arjun (from Vilivakkam) and Anand (from T Nagar) are also set to be fielded from various constituencies. Other names under consideration include Rajmohan Arumugam, Arul Prakasham, and P. Venkataraman.
