Port Blair, August 9: Vice President CP Radhakrishnan visited the historic Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Saturday. He paid homage to the freedom fighters who endured immense suffering for the country’s independence.
During his visit, the Vice President laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Column and offered his respects in the cell of Veer Savarkar. He also toured the Freedom Light, Central Tower, Gallows, and the museum and exhibition gallery. Additionally, he witnessed a light and sound show depicting the heroic saga of the freedom struggle.
On this occasion, the Vice President described Veer Savarkar as a unique and fearless revolutionary. He noted that Savarkar’s intense patriotism has inspired many generations of youth.
Highlighting Savarkar’s imprisonment and the harsh treatment he faced, he stated, “The aim of sending freedom fighters to jail was to break their morale, but Veer Savarkar was never discouraged. Ultimately, it was the British regime that lost its morale.”
The Vice President emphasized that Savarkar endured unimaginable hardships in Cellular Jail. He portrayed Savarkar’s lifelong struggle against British imperialism as a valiant fight that can never be overlooked or dismissed in history. Savarkar’s great sacrifice will always serve as a guiding light for us.
He also specifically acknowledged Savarkar’s contributions against untouchability and social discrimination.
The Vice President remarked that India’s efforts to become more powerful are not about imposing conditions on other countries, but rather ensuring that no one can impose conditions on us. This is true freedom.
Earlier, upon his arrival at INS Utkrisht (Shri Vijaya Puram), he was warmly welcomed by the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi (Retd.), along with other senior officials and dignitaries. The Vice President was also given a formal guard of honor.
CP Radhakrishnan is on a two-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During this time, he will participate in various events, including the launch of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga‘ campaign, and will also visit Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island.
