Venkaiah Naidu Urges Parliament to Grant Legal Status to Amaravati

New Delhi, March 29: Former Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to pass a bill in the current parliamentary session that would grant legal status to Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

On Sunday, Naidu discussed a resolution passed by the state assembly, which requests the central government to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 to legally recognize Amaravati as the capital.

Naidu reminded that he was the Union Minister for Urban Development when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Amaravati. He also highlighted the assistance provided by the central government for the development of the state capital.

The former Vice President referred to the events following 2019 and the damage incurred by the state capital. To prevent such situations in the future, he suggested that the bill to grant Amaravati legal status as the capital of Andhra Pradesh should be passed in the current session of Parliament.

Reports indicate that Amit Shah responded positively to this suggestion. He informed Naidu that the Ministry of Home Affairs has completed preliminary work, and the proposal will be presented in Parliament once it receives approval from the Union Cabinet.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly held a special session on Saturday, during which a resolution was passed requesting the central government to declare and notify Amaravati as the sole capital of the state.

Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu forwarded the resolution to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Union Home Minister, the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Chief Secretary of the state government.
