Bengaluru, April 2: Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Priyank Kharge, announced on Thursday that the tax collection by gram panchayats in the state has seen a remarkable increase, reaching a total of ₹1,560.76 crores.
In Bengaluru, Kharge stated that the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department has excelled in tax collection and revenue generation through the state’s 5,943 gram panchayats, surpassing last year’s figures.
He highlighted that Karnataka secured the top position nationally in tax collection and revenue generation last year. Kharge expressed satisfaction with the year-on-year growth in tax collection, attributing it to better administration, strict adherence to regulations, and an effective tax system.
According to Kharge, gram panchayats collected ₹1,272.54 crores in the fiscal year 2024-25, which accounted for 80% of the total demand, setting a new record. This figure rose to ₹1,382.57 crores in 2025-26, exceeding the previous year by ₹110.04 crores and representing 89% of the current year’s demand, marking yet another record.
He noted that this achievement was made possible through extensive awareness campaigns, tax recovery initiatives, and continuous improvements in the collection system. The minister commended the contributions of everyone involved, from village-level bill collectors to senior officials.
Priyank Kharge also mentioned that there has been a consistent increase in tax collection over the past three years of the current government’s tenure. He emphasized that every rupee collected is being utilized for public works, improved services, and local development in rural areas, thereby promoting overall rural development.
He pointed out that Raichur district achieved a remarkable 129% of its tax target, while 11 districts in the state exceeded 100% in tax collection.
