Caracas, April 21: Venezuela is witnessing a nationwide mobilization against U.S. sanctions, led by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. He called for political and social unity during a rally, emphasizing the need to lift these sanctions.
Rodriguez stated in Cerro El Gallo, San Felix, that the campaign aims to build consensus and apply pressure to remove economic restrictions. He urged Venezuelans to set aside their differences and focus on shared interests.
According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, this mobilization is part of a national rally initiated by Acting President Delcy Rodriguez on April 19, which included events across several states, including Julia, Tachira, and Amazonas.
At the inaugural event held in Julia state, Delcy Rodriguez asserted that Venezuela must overcome U.S. sanctions. She highlighted that millions of children have faced limited access to basic social and economic facilities due to nearly a decade-long economic embargo.
The nationwide campaign features marches and public events across the country, culminating in Caracas on May 1. Last month, the United States lifted sanctions against Acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced her removal from the sanctions list, although it did not provide further details. Rodriguez welcomed this move on the social media platform X, describing it as a positive step towards normalizing and strengthening bilateral relations. She expressed hope that additional sanctions on Venezuela could also be lifted to promote economic growth and cooperation.
Previously, Rodriguez served as Vice President during President Nicolas Maduro’s term and was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 as part of measures targeting members of Maduro’s government.
On January 3, U.S. military forces launched a large-scale operation against Venezuela, detaining Maduro and his wife before taking them to New York. Following this, Rodriguez assumed the role of Acting President, and since then, Washington has maintained contact with her administration.
Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela have persisted for years. Recently, the U.S. has eased some sanctions, particularly in the energy sector. Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves and plays a significant role in the global energy landscape.
The U.S. embassy in Caracas resumed operations on Monday after being closed for seven years.
