Washington, April 21: The United States has seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Arabian Sea following gunfire directed at the vessel. Tehran condemned this action, labeling it as “armed maritime piracy” and has vowed to retaliate, escalating tensions in the region.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the U.S. Navy opened fire on the MV Tasika when it attempted to breach a naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports. CENTCOM reported that the U.S. forces issued multiple warnings over a six-hour standoff before taking action. They informed the Iranian-flagged ship that it was violating the U.S. blockade.
When the crew failed to comply with the orders, a U.S. guided-missile destroyer targeted the ship’s engine room, disabling its propulsion system. This operation marks the first known use of force since Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian maritime activities earlier this month, significantly heightening tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials responded sharply, accusing Washington of aggression. In a statement released by Fox News, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of Iran warned that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic would soon respond to this act of armed maritime piracy by the U.S.
Iranian military officials stated that they did not oppose boarding the ship to protect the crew members and their families. They exercised restraint to ensure their safety. U.S. officials indicated that the ship ignored repeated warnings broadcasted over the radio. According to The New York Times, the USS Spruance ultimately ordered the crew to evacuate the engine room before firing multiple rounds at the ship’s propulsion system.
A U.S. military official reported that Marines are now searching through thousands of containers aboard the ship to determine the nature of its cargo. The New York Times also noted that the Tasika was already under U.S. sanctions and was being closely monitored due to potential links to Iran’s supply chains.
This incident occurs as a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire, with no clear indication of whether it will be extended. The Strait of Hormuz has long been a focal point of U.S.-Iran tensions due to its strategic importance for global oil flow. Previous confrontations in the region have led to spikes in energy prices and heightened fears of broader conflict.
