Mumbai, June 24: Renowned choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant is set to make a comeback on screen through the upcoming film “Eitha,” featuring Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor. This biographical drama showcases Shraddha in the role of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, a Tamasha artist, Lavani dancer, and folk singer. Vaibhavi has choreographed the Lavani dance sequences for the film and shared her insights on this experience.
In an interview, Vaibhavi Merchant expressed, “Portraying Lavani in ‘Eitha’ was an emotional and cultural responsibility for me. It aims to honor a legacy. Lavani is one of India’s folk dance traditions, encompassing not just dance but also the stories, struggles, strength, and depth of art from generations. Understanding this art form and presenting it accurately on screen was crucial.”
She further stated, “When I began working on this film, my focus was on preserving the true essence of Lavani. This project was an opportunity for me to showcase a tradition that is often viewed in a limited context. I believe folk art deserves the right respect and platform so that the new generation can connect with it.”
Vaibhavi continued, “In today’s rapidly changing audience landscape, it is essential to present traditional arts in a way that appeals to modern viewers. With this mindset, I designed the dance sequences for the film. If after watching this film, even a few people make an effort to learn about, understand, and embrace Lavani, that would be my greatest success.”
Directed by Laxman Utekar, “Eitha” stars Shraddha Kapoor, Randeep Hooda, and Anant Joshi in lead roles. The film is produced under the Madok Films banner and is scheduled for release in theaters on August 28.
