Lucknow, August 25: Political activities in Uttar Pradesh are intensifying ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Ravidas Mehrotra has asserted that the people of the state are ready for a change in power, predicting that the SP will form the government after the elections.
He mentioned that to prevent the division of non-BJP votes, the SP is in discussions with other opposition parties for potential alliances. Talks are ongoing with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the final decision regarding the alliance will rest with the party’s national president, Akhilesh Yadav.
In an exclusive interview, Mehrotra stated that the SP is capable of forming a government independently. However, to avoid the fragmentation of non-BJP votes, the party is seeking cooperation from allied parties. The 2027 elections are moving towards a united front under the India alliance. No final decisions on seat allocations have been made yet, and the party leadership will determine this.
He also noted that the SP has strengthened its organization in Uttar Pradesh by forming committees at every polling booth. The party remains active at the grassroots level, continuously fighting against various issues posed by the BJP government. The SP’s struggle will continue until society receives its rights, justice, and respect.
Regarding the ongoing controversy over a fish feast in Ayodhya, Mehrotra responded by stating that the event was organized by the Nishad community, who traditionally consume and serve fish. However, he added that visitors to Ayodhya should avoid eating fish or other non-vegetarian food while visiting the site of Lord Ram. He emphasized that while eating fish in Ayodhya may not be appropriate, if the BJP government advocates for a ban on non-vegetarian food, it should also impose a ban on alcohol.
Mehrotra also criticized the government concerning the proposed march to the police headquarters in Delhi on September 5. He claimed that during protests by students and youth on July 20, there were repeated instances of police brutality. He urged the government to engage in dialogue with the youth planning to protest on September 5 and called for strict action against those responsible for police violence and misconduct.
In response to BJP MLC Dr. Lalji Prasad Nirmal’s statement accusing SP chief Akhilesh Yadav of harming Dalits during his tenure as Chief Minister, Mehrotra countered that the BJP is anxious about Yadav’s growing popularity, leading to unfounded accusations from its leaders. He highlighted ongoing discrimination against Dalits and backward classes under the BJP government, including efforts to undermine their reservations.
On comments made by Union Minister Chirag Paswan, Mehrotra asserted that the reservation for Dalits is a constitutional right that cannot be revoked. He accused the BJP government of attempting to dismantle this reservation, warning that such actions could lead to a significant public movement across the country.
