Assam Chief Minister Sarma Criticizes Rahul Gandhi on Womens Rights Issues

Guwahati, August 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Monday. He accused Gandhi of selectively raising women’s rights issues to target Hinduism and challenged him to clearly support the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

In a post on the social media platform X, CM Sarma questioned Rahul Gandhi’s stance on gender equality. He alleged that the Congress leader has repeatedly criticized Hindu scriptures while remaining silent on patriarchal practices associated with Sharia. Sarma stated that Rahul Gandhi is not a supporter of women’s rights but merely anti-Hindu. He claimed that the empowerment of women is being used as a “convenient cover” to defame Hinduism.

The Chief Minister argued that Manusmriti does not hold the status of a universally accepted and mandatory religious code for Hindus. He asserted that the strength of Hinduism lies in its ability to evolve, reform, and adapt to social circumstances over time. Sarma emphasized that Hinduism’s unique characteristic is its capacity for change and improvement.

Sarma also targeted the Congress party regarding issues related to Muslim women. He accused the party of betraying women by overturning the impact of the Supreme Court’s Shah Bano judgment. He further alleged that Congress opposed legislation against the practice of triple talaq.

Referring to the Congress government in Karnataka, the Assam Chief Minister claimed that Rahul Gandhi ensured no women were included in the state cabinet to maintain political power.

Sarma then directly challenged Rahul Gandhi, asking whether he would support a UCC that guarantees equal rights to citizens irrespective of religion. He questioned if women’s equality is truly more important than politics, would Gandhi unhesitatingly endorse a UCC that provides equal rights beyond religious affiliations?
