Washington, March 10: Senior lawmakers from the Democratic Party are calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged attack on a girls’ school in Iran, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 175 individuals, primarily children. In a joint statement, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner, Brian Schatz, Patty Murray, Jeanne Shaheen, Jack Reed, and Chris Coons expressed their shock at the new reports concerning the attack that occurred near the city of Minab on February 28.
The lawmakers stated that the attack claimed the lives of at least 175 people, most of whom were schoolchildren. They further indicated that credible evidence suggests the possibility that the attack may have been carried out by the U.S. military. If true, this would mark one of the most devastating civilian casualties in decades of U.S. military operations in the Middle East. The senators condemned the killing of schoolchildren as horrific and unacceptable under any circumstances.
They also voiced concerns regarding statements made by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth related to military operations. The statement highlighted that Secretary Hegseth’s openly reckless attitude towards the use of force is particularly troubling, especially his remark that U.S. attacks on Iran would not be bound by “stupid rules.” The lawmakers insisted that a complete investigation into the attack is necessary.
They emphasized that U.S. military personnel are subject to strict regulations designed to promote the highest standards of professionalism. Therefore, a comprehensive and impartial review of this incident and similar occurrences is essential. The lawmakers urged the Pentagon to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
They stressed that Secretary Hegseth must ensure that the ongoing investigation by the Defense Department is thorough, including whether any policy decisions contributed to this tragedy. They also demanded transparency with lawmakers and the public. The statement further called for Hegseth to provide clear answers to the American public and Congress regarding how and why this tragedy occurred.
This issue came to light during a press conference when U.S. President Donald Trump was asked about footage suggesting that a U.S. missile attack may have destroyed the Iranian school. Trump stated that he had not yet reviewed the evidence, saying, “I haven’t seen it. The investigation is ongoing.” The president also indicated that several countries possess similar weapons. The Pentagon has not publicly accepted responsibility for the attack.
