Washington: The US military has conducted airstrikes on ISIS targets across Syria in response to attacks on American personnel in December. The US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed the operations, stating that the strikes were carried out in coordination with allied forces.
According to the US military, the strikes on Saturday targeted multiple ISIS locations throughout Syria. The primary objective was to prevent further attacks against US and allied forces operating in the region. Centcom released a statement saying, “The strikes targeted ISIS throughout Syria as part of our ongoing commitment to eliminate terrorism, prevent future attacks, and protect US and partner forces in the area.”
Centcom further explained that these actions were part of ‘Operation Hawk Eye Strike,’ which began on 19 December. The operation was initially launched as a direct response to an attack in Palmyra but has since evolved into a sustained campaign. The recent strikes were described as a continuation of this operation.
Officials revealed that the operation was carried out under the direction of President Donald Trump, following the 13 December assault on US and Syrian forces in Palmyra. That attack resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two American soldiers, and was attributed to ISIS by the US military.
The command emphasized the firm stance of US and allied forces against ISIS militants, who continue to pose a significant threat. Centcom’s statement underscored this resolve: “Our message is clear. If you harm our troops, we will find and eliminate you anywhere in the world, no matter how much you try to evade justice.”
However, Centcom did not disclose the exact number of targets hit, locations involved, or details on weapons used during the strikes. Additionally, no assessment of damage or casualties was provided.
Following the announcement, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth took to the social media platform X, writing, “We will never forget and never give up.”
