US Confirms Crash of MQ-4C Triton Drone in Persian Gulf

Washington, April 15: The United States has confirmed that its advanced MQ-4C Triton drone has crashed in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. Navy officially reported the incident, stating that the drone went missing during a routine mission in the region.

According to a recent report from the United States Naval Safety Command, the high-altitude, long-endurance surveillance drone is designed for reconnaissance and monitoring enemy activities over maritime areas. Its estimated cost exceeds 2000 crore rupees. The drone is engineered to remain airborne for up to 24 hours.

The report clearly states that on April 9, 2026, the MQ-4C crashed at a confidential location for operational security. Under U.S. Defense Department regulations, incidents causing damage over $2.5 million are classified as Class A mishaps, placing this incident within the same category. U.S. officials clarified that the drone was not shot down but rather “crashed” during its mission. The unmanned drone was operating in international airspace over Hormuz for three hours.

While flying over the Persian Gulf, the drone suddenly disappeared from online flight tracking sites, triggering an emergency code 7700, typically used for in-flight emergencies. Sources suggested it may have been shot down by Iranian air defense forces, although this has not been confirmed. A report from ‘The War Zone’ indicated that the drone fell rapidly from an altitude of 50,000 feet, losing contact after descending below 10,000 feet.

The Navy has not disclosed the exact location of the crash for operational security reasons. No U.S. personnel were aboard the aircraft, and there have been no reports of injuries.

The Triton drone, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, is considered the U.S. Navy’s most advanced unmanned aerial system. It is designed for high-altitude flights and long-duration missions.

According to Northrop Grumman’s official website, the Triton boasts advanced capabilities for defense, including high-altitude flight and extended endurance.

This incident is part of a larger trend, as the U.S. has also lost 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones during the same period, with a total estimated cost of around 6727 crore rupees. The loss of 25 drones raises significant concerns regarding U.S. military strategy and regional security.

The Triton is a variant of the MQ-4 Global Hawk, specializing in maritime surveillance. It has a range exceeding 13,000 kilometers, essential for continuous monitoring over large areas. The aircraft is built to withstand adverse weather conditions, ensuring it can maintain its position over the sea in various circumstances.

Each drone is equipped with an AN/ZPY-3 multi-function active sensor radar, designed for 360-degree maritime surveillance and capable of tracking vessels over extensive areas. The drone excels at transmitting real-time data to other military ships and aircraft, aiding the U.S. military in maintaining constant oversight of maritime regions. Its operational costs are approximately half that of other aircraft.

This incident is seen by foreign media as a significant setback for the Trump administration, which has repeatedly claimed to have devastated Iran. The loss of 25 drones is a substantial blow to U.S. military operations.
