Urgent Call to Revoke Oil Waiver for Russia by Democratic Senators

Washington, May 6: A new debate has emerged in American politics regarding Russia and energy policy. Several Democratic lawmakers are demanding the Trump administration to immediately revoke the oil waiver granted to Russia. They argue that this decision has provided significant economic benefits to Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially amid the ongoing global energy crisis.

In a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bevin, 13 senior Democratic senators have urged for the reinstatement of oil sanctions on Russia and called for strict measures to limit Moscow’s energy revenues. The letter was led by Senator Michael Bennet, with signatures from Adam Schiff, Elizabeth Warren, Alex Padilla, Tammy Baldwin, Richard Blumenthal, Jeff Merkley, and Raphael Warnock among others.

The senators stated, “We urge the Trump administration to reinstate the sanctions on Russian oil supply, which were recently halted by a general license.” They also emphasized the need for immediate additional actions to curb the profits gained by Russia and its intermediaries from rising energy prices.

The letter further accused the administration of failing to accurately assess the impact of the ongoing conflict with Iran on the global energy market. Notably, the potential threats to oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for nearly 20 percent of the world’s energy supply, were overlooked.

According to the senators, rising oil prices have directly benefited Russia. They claimed that due to this global energy crisis, gasoline prices in the U.S. have surged by an average of 85 cents per gallon, and the price of Russian oil has also increased, strengthening Putin’s war machine. Estimates suggest that Russia’s oil revenue doubled in April.

The senators criticized a decision made in March that temporarily eased restrictions on existing Russian oil cargoes at sea. They argued that this move reduced international pressure on Moscow but had little significant impact on fuel prices in the U.S.

The letter also noted that the administration had previously stated publicly that this waiver would not be extended, yet it was quietly extended for another 30 days, indicating inconsistency in policy.

The senators warned that if pressure on Russia’s oil network and its so-called ‘shadow fleet’ is reduced, it could make Moscow more aggressive. They stated that such actions would not only bolster Russia in the Ukraine conflict but could also pose a threat to U.S. NATO allies.
