Malappuram, May 23: The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to kick off on June 11, and Malappuram Municipality is rolling out the red carpet for this grand event. A stunning art installation has been unveiled on the divider at Kunnummal, showcasing a football and a foot performing a ‘bicycle kick.’ This impressive piece is crafted entirely from discarded plastic bottles, reflecting Malappuram’s passion for football.
Municipality President V.T. Rinishah stated that the initiative aims not only to welcome the World Cup but also to raise awareness about plastic waste. She added that the municipality is considering various facilities, including a ‘fun park,’ to celebrate the World Cup in the city.
Football enthusiasts in Malappuram have welcomed this creative installation with great enthusiasm. Over 6,000 plastic bottles, weighing approximately 80 kilograms, were used in its creation. The ‘Harit Karma Sena’ collected these bottles from 40 wards of the municipality. Additionally, around 73 kilograms of iron rods were utilized in the construction. The entire artwork was completed in just nine days at a cost of only ₹43,000.
The installation process took about an hour, aided by an earthmover machine. This artwork, which conveys a message of ‘clean city,’ was created under the municipality’s ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ as part of the World Cup celebrations. A previous large football installation, erected between 2015 and 2020, is also nearby, symbolizing Malappuram’s rich football culture.
The event saw participation from Vice President Jitesh G. Anil, Standing Committee Chairman Harris Amiyaan, Pari Majid, Mariamma Sharif, and Nnath Sameera Mustafa, among others.
