Poonch, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : In a thrilling finale of the Under-14 Hockey Championship held in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, the local team showcased their prowess by defeating Baramulla 3-0. This victory not only secured the championship title for Poonch but also highlighted the team’s exceptional skills throughout the tournament.
Poonch dominated the match from start to finish, netting three goals and leaving Baramulla with little chance to respond. The defense of the Poonch team was particularly impressive, effectively shutting down any scoring opportunities for their opponents. Sarmajit Singh was recognized for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament, earning the title of ‘Player of the Tournament’ and also being named ‘Player of the Match’ in the final.
In an interview, Sarmajit expressed his excitement, stating, “Today, we achieved victory against Baramulla in the final and claimed the title. I owe my success to my coach and team. I also want to urge those who use drugs to stop, as drugs are a form of addiction. Instead, focus on participating in sports.”
Physical Education Master Vijay Kumar thanked the central government for hosting the championship. He noted that hockey talent in the state is rapidly growing. Following this Under-14 championship, an Under-17 tournament is set to take place. Kumar praised Baramulla’s team for their commendable performance in the tournament, acknowledging that they provided tough competition in the final, but ultimately, Poonch’s superior gameplay led them to victory.
Recently, several hockey tournaments have been organized in Jammu and Kashmir to provide young athletes with more opportunities. The initiative aims to promote sports in the region as part of efforts to create a drug-free environment, encouraging youth to engage in sports rather than substance abuse.
