Chennai, March 23: Union Minister and BJP’s Tamil Nadu election in-charge Piyush Goyal is currently in Chennai. He is set to participate in a meeting aimed at finalizing the long-pending seat-sharing arrangement within the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
This visit follows a meeting in New Delhi, where AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami engaged in detailed discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Reports suggest that several contentious issues were resolved during that meeting, which had stalled progress in alliance talks over the past few weeks.
After an informal agreement on the broader framework of seat allocation, Monday’s discussions are expected to focus on resolving remaining differences, particularly in sensitive constituencies where multiple allied parties have made claims.
Alliance leaders have indicated that the goal is to achieve a balanced formula that ensures unity within the coalition while strengthening its electoral prospects.
BJP’s state president Nainar Nagendran confirmed that Minister Goyal will hold meetings with major alliance partners, including AIADMK, PMK, and AMMK, to formalize this agreement.
He is expected to conclude consultations on the same day he arrives in Chennai, highlighting the urgency to finalize the agreement as the election schedule approaches.
Sources indicate that most of the tough negotiations regarding seat allocations have been completed, with only a few seats remaining for final discussions. The BJP is likely to contest around 28 to 29 seats, while PMK may receive 16 to 18 seats and AMMK approximately 10 seats. Smaller allied parties could be allocated one to three seats based on their regional influence.
Discussions have primarily centered around strategically important urban and semi-urban constituencies. In Chennai, the BJP is considering options between T Nagar and Velachery and has also shown interest in Mylapore. In Coimbatore, the party may secure an additional seat compared to the last election cycle, while in Kanyakumari district, the alliance aims to retain a significant constituency under its broader electoral strategy.
With most differences now minimized, Monday’s talks could potentially mark the final step toward a formal announcement of the NDA’s seat-sharing agreement in Tamil Nadu.
