UNESCO Celebrates Chinese New Year with Cultural Festivities

Beijing, February 12: The Chinese Permanent Mission to UNESCO hosted the 2026 Spring Festival Temple Fair at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. UNESCO Director-General Khaled Al-Anani expressed his hope for strengthening collaboration with China, viewing the Year of the Horse as an opportunity. He extended New Year wishes in Chinese, celebrating the cultural significance of the occasion.

Over 500 guests, including high-level UNESCO representatives and permanent delegates from various countries, participated in the festivities, marking the traditional Chinese New Year.

In his speech, Al-Anani highlighted that the Year of the Horse symbolizes courage and progress, reflecting a spirit of resilience in facing challenges. In the current uncertain international environment, this forward-moving spirit is particularly vital, and UNESCO is ready to seize this opportunity to enhance cooperation with China. He concluded his address with New Year wishes in Chinese, which received enthusiastic applause.

UNESCO General Conference President Khondkar M. Talha noted that the Spring Festival symbolizes sharing and connection. Culture brings nations and peoples closer, fostering consensus through exchange and mutual learning. The Year of the Horse represents vitality, and its spirit encourages all parties to strengthen trust in UNESCO’s reform and development processes, enhance cooperation, and advance cultural exchange and multilateral collaboration.

Yang Xinyu, China’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, remarked that the Spring Festival not only marks the beginning of the traditional Chinese New Year but also serves as a significant time for family reunions, sharing joy, and promoting hope. This year’s Temple Fair at UNESCO headquarters allowed guests to experience traditional Chinese festive customs firsthand. These time-honored traditions reflect the profound historical accumulation and contemporary values of Chinese culture.
