Umesh Singh Kushwaha Re-elected as Bihar JD(U) President for the Third Time

Patna, March 6: Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the legislator from Mahnar in Vaishali district, has been re-elected as the president of the Bihar unit of the Janata Dal-United (JD(U)) for the third consecutive term.

Kushwaha submitted his nomination for the position on Friday and was elected unopposed as no other candidates filed their nominations. The formal announcement of his election was made at 4 PM.

He filed his nomination in front of state election officials Ashok Kumar ‘Munna’ and Paramhans Kumar. Several senior JD(U) leaders were present during this process.

Prominent proposers included Bihar ministers Leshi Singh, former ministers and legislators Ratnesh Sada, Sheila Mandal, and Poonam Sinha. Other key JD(U) leaders present at the event included state minister Ramnath Thakur, minister Shrawan Kumar, chief whip of the Bihar Legislative Council Sanjay Kumar Singh, among others.

Kushwaha has been leading the JD(U) organization in Bihar for the past five years and is considered one of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s most trusted leaders. He was first appointed as the state JD(U) president in 2021, succeeding Vashistha Narayan Singh, and has held the position since then.

The JD(U) traditionally relies on the ‘Lav-Kush’ social coalition, which includes the Kurmi and Koiri communities. Umesh Singh Kushwaha, belonging to the Koiri community, is viewed as a leader who strengthens the ‘Kush’ faction of this political equation, helping the party maintain its traditional voter base.

Despite the departure of prominent Koiri leaders like Upendra Kushwaha from the JD(U), Umesh Singh Kushwaha has remained loyal to Nitish Kumar, solidifying his position within the party leadership.

He won the Mahnar assembly seat in both 2015 and 2025, although he faced defeat in the 2020 Bihar assembly elections. Despite this setback, Nitish Kumar retained his trust in Kushwaha, assigning him the responsibility of leading the party organization in the state.

Kushwaha’s re-election as state JD(U) president comes at a crucial time, as the political landscape in Bihar is rapidly changing following Nitish Kumar’s announcement of his candidacy for the Rajya Sabha.
