U.S. Urges Allies to Enhance Security in the Strait of Hormuz

Washington, May 6: The United States has called on its allied nations to take a more active role in securing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime routes. This strait sees a significant volume of shipping traffic.

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that Washington expects its partner countries to contribute to maritime security, while the U.S. military currently leads new missions in the region to protect commercial vessels from Iranian threats.

Hegseth emphasized that the world relies on this waterway more than the U.S. does. He added that America is working to manage the situation before handing over responsibilities to other nations.

The U.S. is encouraging partners such as Japan, Australia, and European countries to play a larger role. However, he clarified that the U.S. will not wait for them to step up.

This call comes as the U.S. is conducting an operation named “Project Freedom,” aimed at ensuring the safety of commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in attacks and disruptions from Iran.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Air Force General Dan Keen, noted that Iran has repeatedly threatened and attacked commercial ships, aiming to disrupt maritime trade and harm the global economy.

He also mentioned that pressure remains on this waterway, with ongoing low-level attacks from Iran, although the situation has not escalated to full-scale war.

The U.S. has deployed over 15,000 troops to the area, along with naval warships and aerial resources, to create a secure passage and ensure safe shipping operations.

According to officials, two U.S.-flagged commercial vessels have successfully navigated this route, with more expected to follow as shipping companies gradually regain confidence.

Hegseth indicated that this mission is temporary, with the goal of gradually transferring security responsibilities to other nations.

The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial portion of the world’s oil transport, making it crucial for all countries dependent on energy imports.
