Earlier on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would not rush into an agreement with Iran due to political pressures from the midterm elections. He warned that if the ongoing negotiations do not yield a satisfactory deal for the U.S., military action could resume.
During a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump remarked that Iran believed the pressure from the midterm elections would weaken their negotiating position. He stated, “I don’t care about the midterm elections.”
Regarding the ongoing talks with Iran, Trump emphasized that the U.S. is not satisfied with the current terms and that military action could be reinstated if their demands are not met.
Trump also noted, “They just want to make some kind of deal. I don’t think they have any other options.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the White House dismissed reports from Iranian media regarding a draft agreement, which suggested that the U.S. would withdraw its forces from areas near Iran and lift naval restrictions on Iranian ports.
According to a report by Iranian state channel IRIB TV, this draft included provisions for the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the lifting of naval restrictions at Iranian ports.
During the Cabinet meeting, Trump clarified that Iran would not receive any relief from sanctions in exchange for relinquishing its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
When asked by PBS News if Iran would receive sanctions relief under the current agreement, Trump replied, “No, absolutely not. There will be no sanctions relief.”
He stated that while Iran would relinquish its highly enriched uranium, they would not receive any relief from sanctions in return. Absolutely not.
