New Delhi, March 25: The Anti-Snatching Cell of the national capital’s Southwest District has apprehended two notorious snatchers. The police recovered a scooter used in the crime, the clothes worn during the incident, and a gold chain featuring an ‘Om’ locket that was stolen.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Akash Awasthi (27), a resident of East Vinod Nagar, and Karthik Arora (26), from West Vinod Nagar, New Delhi. Both suspects have previously been involved in over ten cases of theft and snatching.
According to Delhi police officials, the incident occurred on February 23 when a 38-year-old woman from Nanakpura was returning home from school with her two daughters. Near Subhash Park, two young men on a black scooter approached from behind and snatched the gold chain from her neck before fleeing the scene. The chain had a heart-shaped locket inscribed with ‘Om.’ The suspects wore black helmets to conceal their identities and had covered the scooter’s registration number with black tape.
Following the incident, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation. A special team led by Inspector Hari Singh, including several head constables, was formed. The team reviewed footage from over 500 CCTV cameras across a 90-kilometer area to identify the suspects.
Based on technical evidence and intelligence, the police arrested both suspects in the Kalyanpuri area. During interrogation, they confessed to committing two separate snatching incidents in the South Campus area.
According to police, Akash Awasthi used his Jupiter scooter during the crimes. Further questioning of both suspects is ongoing, and their involvement in other cases is being investigated.
Police officials noted that the suspects had been committing thefts and snatching for some time. They admitted to participating in several incidents during interrogation. Authorities are now searching for other members of their gang, and arrests are expected soon.
