Chennai, April 15: Vijay, the leader of the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK), expressed concerns on Wednesday regarding the central government’s proposed constitutional amendment.
Vijay warned that this amendment could severely harm southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu. The purpose of the amendment is to reorganize parliamentary representation.
In a statement, Vijay referred to the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aims to increase the number of members in the Lok Sabha from the current 543 to 850. Discussions on this bill are expected to take place during the special parliamentary session starting Thursday.
While welcoming the long-awaited law providing 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament, he cautioned that the redistricting-related amendments should not take precedence over the women’s reservation bill.
He stated that if this amendment passes without adequate safeguards, it could exacerbate the proportional disparity in representation between northern and southern states.
According to Vijay, such changes would diminish the parliamentary representation of southern states that have effectively implemented population control measures, while increasing the influence of more populous northern states.
He argued that this could have far-reaching consequences for policy-making, legislative priorities, and the balance of federal power.
Vijay warned that if the voices of southern states weaken, there may be less attention to issues related to language, culture, and state rights in Parliament.
He expressed concern that the aspirations and worries of people from states like Tamil Nadu may not be adequately heard in Parliament. Vijay described this move as potentially discriminatory.
The TVK leader also alleged that the proposed changes could affect the allocation of central funds. He noted that changes in the distribution of parliamentary seats could alter the basis for financial resource allocation among states, potentially reducing the allocations for states like Tamil Nadu.
He mentioned that the Tamil Nadu government has previously raised concerns about insufficient central funding and limited allocations for projects during the presentation of the central budget.
Vijay warned that post-redistricting redistribution based on population could lead to further reductions in financial assistance.
He urged the center to reconsider its stance, demanding the continuation of the current system and calling for the withdrawal of the proposed amendment. He emphasized that states adhering to national policies should not be ‘penalized’ while others are ‘rewarded.’
