Washington, June 13: The G7 summit is set to take place in France next week, with U.S. President Donald Trump attending. The White House announced that Trump will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders during the summit.
Discussions will likely focus on the ongoing negotiations regarding the proposed India-U.S. trade agreement. A senior U.S. official indicated that this trade deal will be a significant topic during the talks. However, they do not expect a final agreement to be reached at the summit.
During a briefing at the White House, an official stated, “I believe there will be discussions on the potential trade agreement.” Earlier this year, both countries signed a Joint Framework Agreement and have been engaged in extensive talks over the past year to resolve differences and identify mutually beneficial areas.
The official noted, “We have been having deep discussions with the Indians for the past year.” A U.S. delegation visited India a few weeks ago, and discussions are still ongoing at various levels.
The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamison Greer, is expected to visit India around June 22 to advance negotiations on the proposed trade agreement.
The official emphasized, “We believe that the U.S. and India are natural economic partners and can offer each other a lot.”
In addition to trade, discussions are anticipated to cover economic growth, supply chains, artificial intelligence (AI), investment partnerships, and various global security challenges. The official mentioned, “President Trump will engage with G7 leaders on crucial issues like economic growth, strengthening supply chains, illegal migration, and artificial intelligence.”
According to the U.S. official, Trump will hold a bilateral meeting with Modi on June 17, followed by a working lunch with G7 leaders, partner nations, and technical officials.
This will be the first bilateral meeting between Trump and Modi since last year’s successful Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. A senior U.S. official did not provide further details regarding the upcoming meeting.
Trump is scheduled to depart from Washington on Monday and will arrive in France the same day. His itinerary includes bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Emir of Qatar, the President of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and Prime Minister Modi.
The White House stated that Trump aims to promote an economic agenda focused on investment and development partnerships.
A senior official remarked, “The President will center discussions on investment partnerships that are mutually beneficial for both the investing and receiving countries.”
The government plans to emphasize essential minerals and supply chain security, particularly in light of growing geopolitical competition and concerns over reliance on fewer suppliers.
The official indicated that Trump will work with G7 partners to strengthen essential mineral supply chains, enhance economic security, and address illegal migration and drug trafficking. AI is expected to be a key theme of the summit.
The summit schedule includes several working sessions with G7 leaders, invited partners, and business leaders. Trump is also expected to engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meet with Middle Eastern leaders, and participate in a lunch focusing on innovation and AI with global technology CEOs.
The White House noted that this summit will provide an opportunity to advance U.S. economic and strategic priorities while strengthening collaboration with allies and partners.
