Indian-American Leaders Secure Wins in U.S. Midterm Elections

Indian-American politicians Suhas Subramanyam and Aruna Miller win re-election, while Pia Dandia leads in Floridas tight race.

Washington, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : Indian-American leaders have made significant strides in the recent U.S. midterm elections. Suhas Subramanyam and Aruna Miller, both from the Democratic Party, have successfully secured re-election, while Pia Dandia is currently leading in her race in Florida.

In Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, Subramanyam garnered approximately 63% of the votes, surpassing his Republican opponent, Dave Beckwith, who received around 35%. NBC News projected his victory after about 82% of votes were counted. This win marks Subramanyam’s second term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He made history in 2024 as the first Indian-American elected from Virginia.

In neighboring Maryland, Aruna Miller also retained her position as Lieutenant Governor. She ran on a ticket with Democratic Governor Wes Moore, whose victory was also anticipated by NBC News. Miller’s re-election ensures continued Indian-American representation in Maryland’s top state administration.

In Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, the race between Democratic candidate Pia Dandia and Republican Casey Askar has been closely contested. Early results show Dandia leading with around 52% of the votes, while Askar trails with approximately 48%. With nearly 94% of the votes counted, NBC News has yet to declare a winner for this seat.

Dandia, a former school principal, is vying for a congressional seat in South Florida’s newly drawn district. Attention remains focused on the final outcome of this competitive race.

Meanwhile, in Ohio, Indian-American Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is trailing Democratic nominee Amy Acton in the governor’s race. Early counts indicated Acton with about 63% and Ramaswamy with 34%, with around a quarter of the votes tallied. NBC News has not yet made a definitive call on this contest.

Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, enjoys the backing of former President Donald Trump as he seeks to succeed incumbent Governor Mike DeWine. Acton, a physician and former health director of Ohio, represents the Democratic side.

In Massachusetts, Democratic Senator Ed Markey successfully secured re-election. This outcome means a loss for independent candidate Shiva Ayyadurai, who also competed against Republican John Deaton.

In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff also achieved victory over Republican Mike Collins, marking a significant win in the Senate races.

Additionally, in the Georgia state legislative elections, Indian-American Democratic candidate Jyot Singh is reportedly leading against Republican Yasin Mogaji in House District 97, although the vote counting is still ongoing.

Other Indian-American candidates, including Republican Mahesh Ganorkar from North Carolina and Democratic Pooja Sethi from Texas, await their election results.

The midterm elections held on November 3 saw voting for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats, as well as various gubernatorial, state legislative, and local offices. These elections are crucial as they occur during President Donald Trump’s second term, influencing the balance of power in both chambers of Congress.
