Trump Signs Executive Order to Reform College Sports in the U.S.

Washington, April 4: President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at bringing “order, fairness, and stability” to college sports. He warned that rising economic and legal pressures pose a threat to the future of this system.

The order directs federal agencies to strictly enforce rules related to player transfers, eligibility, and compensation. It also calls for an investigation into whether universities that violate these rules can be deemed ineligible for federal grants and contracts.

The order proposes the establishment of new and clear standards nationwide to ensure stability within the system. This includes transparent and uniform eligibility rules for players, defined transfer regulations, and a five-year limit for student-athletes to compete.

The administration emphasizes measures to ensure “medical care for student-athletes,” regulate revenue sharing, and impose restrictions on “improper financial arrangements,” including “pay-for-play” agreements promoted by various groups or entities.

Additionally, the order instructs the General Services Administration and the Department of Education to gather more data related to college sports to improve compliance with these regulations. The Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general are also tasked with taking action if necessary.

This initiative comes amid growing concerns in Washington over the escalating “money race” in college sports. Officials state that lawsuits and varying state regulations have contributed to this situation.

The White House has asserted that college sports cannot function without clear and established rules. Officials believe that the current system disproportionately benefits high-revenue sports like football and basketball, while smaller sports, particularly women’s and Olympic programs, are suffering.

The order highlights that this disorder is increasing economic pressures, threatening the resources of sports other than football and basketball, as well as many universities. It underscores the significant economic and social importance of college sports, which support over 500,000 student-athletes and provide approximately $4 billion in scholarships annually.
