Washington, July 15: President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the stringent sanctions on Russia, supported by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, could potentially be expanded to include Iran and Hezbollah. However, he noted that there has been no discussion regarding proposals related to countries like India and China.
During a meeting at the White House with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Sudani, Trump was asked if he would sign this legislation. He responded that lawmakers are considering broadening the scope of the sanctions package. This move could be made in honor of Graham, who was one of the strongest advocates for tough measures against Russia.
“I know Lindsey wanted this very much,” Trump stated. He further indicated that including Iran would be a significant step, adding that Hezbollah might also be incorporated into the sanctions.
Trump mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding this proposal, but there appears to be considerable support for moving it forward. “We are considering it seriously. This is in honor of Lindsey, and it was his major issue. He wanted it more than anything else,” he said.
“There is a good chance this will happen,” he added. When asked if secondary sanctions on countries like India and China would be included in this legislation, Trump replied that no decision has been made yet.
“If it comes to secondary sanctions on China, India, and other countries, we will have to see. There has been no discussion on this yet,” he explained.
This statement came during a lengthy conversation between Trump and the Iraqi Prime Minister regarding issues in Iraq, Iran, and the Middle East. Trump reiterated that Iran’s influence in the region has significantly weakened.
“I believe the Middle East is coming together now,” he said. “We are removing the bully from the Middle East. Iran was the bully in the region, intimidating Iraq and every other country.”
He concluded by stating that there is no longer any fear, as Iran’s military strength has been greatly diminished.
