Washington, May 12: President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding his upcoming trip to China, highlighting Taiwan and energy security as key issues. He praised his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, asserting that tensions over Taiwan would not escalate further.
Speaking to reporters during a maternal health program at the White House, Trump stated that his administration is currently working “very well” with China. He criticized previous U.S. administrations for allowing China to take advantage of the United States.
“We are doing a lot of business, but it’s smart business,” Trump said. He emphasized that previous presidents allowed the U.S. to be exploited for many years, while now, they are collaborating effectively with China.
Throughout the conversation, Trump repeatedly commended Xi Jinping, stating, “I have a good relationship with President Xi. I respect him greatly, and I hope he respects me too.” He noted that Xi did not respect the previous administration and criticized former President Joe Biden, claiming he struggled to communicate effectively.
Trump connected discussions about China to tensions in the Middle East and the security of oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He mentioned that China relies heavily on oil from this region, receiving about 40 percent of its oil needs from there, indicating that stability in the area is also in China’s interest.
He acknowledged that the Taiwan issue might arise during discussions, suggesting, “I think he (Xi Jinping) will bring up the Taiwan issue more than I will. But I believe everything will be fine.” Trump asserted that strong U.S. leadership would prevent a crisis over Taiwan.
“If you have the right president, I don’t think anything will happen,” he stated, adding that Taiwan receives considerable support from Japan and several countries in the region.
Trump also praised Xi’s leadership style, describing him as a “very good person” and a “remarkable individual” who loves his country. He expressed eagerness to meet with Xi.
In defending his policy towards Iran, Trump noted that recent military actions and pressure have brought stability to global markets, claiming that the stock market is performing better now than when the conflict began.
