New Delhi, August 19: U.S. President Donald Trump has commended India’s electoral system, prompting foreign affairs expert Wail Awad to point out the significant differences between the voting processes in the two countries. Awad noted that Trump’s intention is to improve the American electoral system. He emphasized that India’s use of voter ID, Aadhaar card verification, and birth certificates allows the world’s largest democracy to maintain control over its vast electorate.
Awad remarked that times have changed. Previously, Western nations were seen as models to follow, but now the U.S. and other Western countries may adopt Asian systems. He also referred to Sergio Gore, the new U.S. ambassador to India, as a close friend of Trump, suggesting that his appointment will strengthen bilateral and strategic partnerships between the two nations.
Commenting on Trump’s praise for India’s electoral system, Awad stated, “The U.S. government is addressing a political issue. There are considerable differences between the voting systems of the U.S. and India. The U.S. has a decentralized system. If Trump is mentioning this, it is to improve their electoral process.”
He pointed out that the mid-term elections are approaching in the U.S. and that President Trump is advocating for a smooth election process. In India, voter ID, Aadhaar verification, and birth certification are also required, along with the necessity of visiting polling booths. The electoral systems differ significantly.
Regarding the international recognition of India’s electoral system, Awad suggested it is possible. In the past, there was a desire to emulate the Western world, but now the U.S. and other Western countries might consider adopting Asian systems. India, being the largest democracy, can still maintain control, thus earning a prominent place in democratic governance.
He added that U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gore is a close associate of President Trump and has strong ties to India, which is why he was appointed. India is also keen on strengthening its bilateral relations with the U.S. The strategic partnership between the two nations has intensified since Trump’s tenure, with India firmly presenting its stance without compromise. If both sides can reach an agreement, the bilateral partnership could be further solidified.
