Washington, August 12: Former U.S. President Donald Trump is contemplating a bid for a third term in the 2028 elections. However, he acknowledges that U.S. law presents significant challenges to such an ambition.
When asked about his seriousness regarding a third campaign, Trump told reporters, “Everyone keeps asking me this question, and you know the law is very strict on this matter.”
He added, “I would love to run again, but the law is quite strong.”
According to the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, no individual can be elected president more than twice. This amendment was enacted in 1951, partly in response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency. Trump has already served two terms, winning elections in 2016 and 2020.
In recent weeks, Trump has frequently mentioned the year 2028. A journalist even referred to a dinner event where “Trump 2028” was promoted, with supporters chanting for his return to the race.
In response, Trump noted that everyone is asking him about it. “Even tonight, people were chanting ‘2028’ at the event,” he remarked.
However, Trump did not clarify whether he would attempt to challenge the constitutional restrictions or how a campaign might proceed. His comments emphasized the strength of current laws.
The former president also discussed security measures during his recent trip to Turkey. He stated that the arrangements were made by the Secret Service and military, and he followed their advice.
“It completely depends on the Secret Service. I do what they feel is right. Therefore, I heed the advice of the Secret Service and military,” Trump explained.
When questioned about the need for extensive security, he replied, “I receive a lot of threats.”
He elaborated, “I get many threats that you don’t know about. Any influential president receives numerous threats. Those who are less impactful do not face such threats.”
Trump also commented on tensions with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the U.S. maintains control over this vital maritime route and praised the U.S. Navy.
“We have complete control over the Strait of Hormuz. It is solely under our control because our Navy is outstanding,” he stated.
When asked if he trusts Iran, Trump replied bluntly, “I do not trust Iran.”
At the beginning of the discussion, he praised the U.S. economy, stock market, and employment figures.
“The country is doing well. The stock market is performing excellently,” Trump concluded.
