West Indies scored 79 runs in the powerplay against India, setting a record in T20 history at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Hyderabad, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : In a remarkable display of batting, the West Indies set a new record during the powerplay in the fourth T20 match against India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The team scored 79 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the first six overs, marking the highest powerplay score against India in T20 history. This achievement ties them with New Zealand, who set the same score earlier this year in Thiruvananthapuram.
This powerplay score surpassed their previous best against India, which was 78 runs without losing a wicket in Lauderhill back in 2016. Earlier this year, in Ranchi, they managed to score 72 runs but lost three wickets in the process.
Batting first after losing the toss, the West Indies finished their innings with a total of 247 runs, losing three wickets. This total ranks as the fourth-highest first innings score for the West Indies. Their highest score in 2023 was 258 runs against South Africa in Centurion, followed by 256 runs against Ireland in 2025, and 254 runs against Zimbabwe earlier this year.
The West Indies’ score of 247 is also the second-highest first innings total against India in T20 history. England holds the record with 257 runs scored against India in Southampton in 2026. Previously, the West Indies had scored 245 runs against India in Lauderhill in 2016.
Captain Shai Hope played a pivotal role in this match, scoring an unbeaten 102 runs. Sherfane Rutherford contributed significantly with a quickfire 49 runs off just 26 balls, while Shimron Hetmyer added 33 runs. For India, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, and Axar Patel each took one wicket.
