Mumbai, June 14: The bodies of two medical students who drowned at Tighra Dam in Gwalior have been recovered after a 17-hour rescue operation.
On Saturday evening, two second-year MBBS students from Gajra Raja Medical College drowned while enjoying a picnic with friends. The deceased have been identified as Ayush Srivastava from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, and Gopal Agrawal from Bina, Sagar. The incident occurred in the ‘Kachhi Paar’ area of the dam, a restricted zone located about three kilometers from the boat club, where public access is prohibited.
According to police reports, a group of eight medical students (both boys and girls) went for the picnic. Ayush and Gopal entered the water, slipped on the rocks, and fell into a 40-50 feet deep section.
Their friends grew concerned when the two did not return. During the search, the students’ shoes and clothing were found on the rocky shore, prompting them to alert the police.
CSP Krishnapal Singh and Station House Officer Shivram Singh Kanshana led the Tighra police to the scene. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local divers were deployed for the rescue. Despite challenging conditions due to the dam’s depth, mud, and rocks, the operation continued overnight using boats and high-powered lights.
Gopal Agrawal’s body was recovered late Saturday night, while Ayush Srivastava’s search lasted nearly 17 hours, concluding with the recovery of his body on Sunday afternoon.
Police officials confirmed that both students had entered the restricted ‘Kachhi Paar’ area. The families of the deceased have been notified, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations as further investigations are underway.
