Muzaffarpur, June 4: A devastating fire broke out late Tuesday night at Prasad Hospital, one of the leading private hospitals in North Bihar, causing chaos among patients and their families. The incident occurred in the Brahmapura police station area, leading to a panic-stricken situation as patients struggled to escape. District Magistrate Subrata Kumar Sen confirmed that three fatalities have been reported.
Initial reports indicate that the fire started in the hospital’s ICU ward due to a short circuit. The flames quickly spread, filling the ICU with smoke, which severely endangered the lives of critically ill patients. As the situation escalated, patients and their relatives rushed to evacuate, prompting an immediate rescue operation to assist those trapped in the ICU.
Upon receiving the emergency call, dozens of fire brigade vehicles arrived at the scene. Firefighters worked tirelessly for several hours to bring the blaze under control. Meanwhile, hundreds of ambulances were mobilized to transport patients to safer locations and nearby hospitals. Many patients were urgently referred to other facilities. The atmosphere remained tense late into the night, with relatives anxiously seeking information about their loved ones from hospital and administrative officials. Numerous individuals have alleged that the hospital management failed to adhere to safety protocols, contributing to this tragic incident.
Fire department official Ram Niwas Pandey stated that a comprehensive assessment of the situation is underway. He noted that several patients were affected by smoke inhalation in the ICU, and further details regarding the fatalities are being gathered. District Magistrate Subrata Kumar Sen reiterated the confirmation of three deaths and announced that a thorough investigation into the incident is being conducted.
In a statement, the hospital management expressed its commitment to cooperating with authorities and emphasized that an investigation into the causes of the fire is ongoing. The district administration has also ordered a detailed inquiry into the event. Fire department officials suggested that a lack of fire safety equipment in the ICU ward may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, although no official confirmation has been made regarding the cause.
Prasad Hospital is regarded as a prestigious private facility in North Bihar, attracting a large number of patients for treatment. This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about fire safety, emergency management, and adherence to safety standards in private hospitals.
Currently, police, administrative, and fire department teams are on-site. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and officials fear that the death toll may rise, as some patients’ conditions and information remained unclear late into the night.
