
Cuttack, March 16: A devastating fire at the Trauma Care ICU of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has resulted in the deaths of ten individuals. The atmosphere is filled with sorrow as families of the victims mourn their loss.
One woman, who was at the hospital with her daughter, recounted her harrowing experience. “My daughter was in the ICU, and I was waiting outside. I then asked my daughter-in-law to go inside. Suddenly, I heard a woman shouting in Hindi from within the ICU. I couldn’t understand her clearly at first. Initially, I thought someone was in trouble. But soon, I noticed that the ICU room was filled with smoke,” she said.
Local MLA Souvik Biswal expressed his condolences, stating, “This is extremely unfortunate. The fire incident in the Trauma ICU has claimed the lives of ten patients. It occurred between 2:45 and 3:00 AM. Currently, 13 patients are receiving treatment. We have spoken to the Cuttack Collector and the ACB Superintendent about this matter. The Chief Minister has ordered a judicial inquiry.”
According to officials, hospital staff and firefighters launched a rapid rescue operation to evacuate patients safely after the fire broke out. During this operation, at least 11 hospital staff members suffered burns and were promptly admitted for treatment. The Chief Minister visited the hospital to inquire about their condition.
The administration has confirmed the identities of the deceased, including Ramesh Chandra Parida, Dasaru Munda, MD Nayum, Gourang Chandra Barik, Sheikh Abdul Sattar, Madhusudan Dalai, Krishna Chandra Biswal, Ravindra Das, Cheru Parida, and Menka Raut.
