Dehradun, April 23: A devastating road accident occurred in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. A utility pickup vehicle lost control and plunged into a deep gorge near Nail on the Chamba-Koti Colony road. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, while two others sustained injuries.
There were a total of ten people in the vehicle. The accident took place as the vehicle was traveling from Rishikesh to Ghansali. All passengers were residents of the villages of Chanji, Thela, and Chakreda in the Ghansali area. They were returning from a funeral in Haridwar when the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and fell into the gorge. The scene was chaotic, with local residents rushing to the site to initiate rescue operations.
Brijesh Bhatt, the district disaster management officer, confirmed the fatalities. The two injured individuals were promptly rescued from the gorge and transported to the district hospital in Bauradi for treatment. Fortunately, both are reported to be out of danger.
The injured have been identified as Uttam Kumar (30 years old), son of Pussu, from the village of Lostu Badiyargarh, and Ankit (22 years old), son of Asha Lal, from the village of Nailchami, Ghansali.
Upon receiving news of the accident, police, SDRF, and fire service teams quickly arrived at the scene. The rescue operation was conducted swiftly. District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal personally headed to the site, accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police Shweta Chaubey and Ghansali MLA Shaktiklal Shah, who assessed the rescue efforts.
The administration is on high alert. Joint teams from SDRF, police, and local administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations. Efforts are ongoing to retrieve the vehicle from the gorge and recover the bodies.
Poor weather, narrow roads, and high speeds in hilly areas often contribute to such accidents. This incident underscores the need for vigilant driving, vehicle condition checks, and adherence to traffic regulations on mountainous routes.
District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal stated that an investigation into the causes of the accident will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible. Families affected by the tragedy will receive all possible assistance.
