Tamil Nadu Government Issues Alert as Heavy Rainfall Expected

Tamil Nadu prepares for heavy rainfall with an orange alert in six districts, ensuring emergency measures are in place.

Chennai, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu government is on high alert as heavy rainfall is anticipated across the state. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K. Sengottaiyan announced that an orange alert has been issued for six districts, instructing officials to prepare emergency measures.

Speaking to reporters at the emergency control center in Ezhilagam, Chennai, Sengottaiyan identified the districts under alert as Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Coimbatore, and Nilgiri. He emphasized that collectors and departmental officials are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to take action if necessary.

Recent rainfall measurements show that Coimbatore’s Mettupalayam recorded 6.2 cm, while Nilgiri received 2.3 cm. Sengottaiyan noted that the rainfall levels in other areas are relatively low. The government is conducting daily reviews of the situation and is implementing immediate actions based on reports from the districts. Coordination among departments is crucial for effective emergency response.

Reflecting on previous heavy rains in Chennai, Sengottaiyan mentioned that the city experienced 31 cm of rainfall without causing significant disruption to daily life. He highlighted that relief operations commenced promptly, with water being drained to restore normalcy.

The minister pointed out that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay praised the actions taken during that period. He reiterated the government’s commitment to disaster preparedness, emphasizing that the Chief Minister aims to ensure readiness for any level of rainfall.

Monthly departmental reviews are being conducted to assess progress in preparations and actions. Coordination among departments is being established to identify responsibilities and implement necessary measures.

Sengottaiyan also referred to potential statistical indications of a “super El Niño” effect after the first week of November. However, he did not elaborate on its sources or its possible impact on rainfall in Tamil Nadu. He assured that changes in weather conditions would become clearer later and stressed the need for ongoing vigilance.

The minister concluded by stating that the Chief Minister is focused on protecting citizens from natural disasters through coordinated administration and timely interventions.
