Traffic Restored on Mumbai-Pune Expressway After 32-Hour Delay

Mumbai, February 5: Traffic has been restored on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway after emergency conditions caused by a gas tanker overturning near the Adoshi Tunnel. According to the Raigad Highway Police, the gas leak from the tanker has been completely contained, and the vehicle has been removed from the highway. The lane heading towards Mumbai, which was closed for approximately 32 hours, is now open, allowing traffic to flow smoothly once again.

A press release from the Superintendent of Police of the Raigad Highway Safety Team provided details of the incident. On February 3, around 5 PM, a tanker filled with propylene gas overturned on the Mumbai-bound lane at kilometer 41/000 near the Adoshi Tunnel. The accident led to a leak of flammable propylene gas, posing a serious threat to passenger safety.

In light of the severity of the situation, traffic on the expressway was immediately halted as a precaution. To minimize inconvenience to travelers, information about the incident was continuously shared through media and social media channels. Following the accident, teams from the highway police, Raigad district police, fire brigade, NDRF, BPCL, Help Foundation, and chemical experts quickly arrived at the scene.

The press release noted that stopping the gas leak from the tanker was technically challenging. Nevertheless, all involved agencies and chemical experts worked tirelessly and persistently. Finally, on February 5, 2026, at approximately 1:30 AM, the gas leak was successfully contained. The tanker was then safely relocated to a secure area. Following the completion of relief operations, traffic is now flowing smoothly on both the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH-48).

Authorities have urged travelers to disregard rumors. It is important to note that the incident had caused significant traffic jams on the expressway, leading to considerable distress for thousands of travelers. With traffic now restored, passengers can breathe a sigh of relief.
