Traders Urge Rahul Gandhi to Postpone Protests Amid Festival Season Concerns

Traders in Lucknow request Rahul Gandhi to halt protests to protect business during the festive season, citing economic impacts.

Lucknow, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Traders across India are expressing concerns over ongoing protests related to the SIR issue. Yogendra Singh, the General Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Industry and Trade Association, has written to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, urging him to suspend these protests during the festival season. He argues that the demonstrations are negatively impacting shopping in the markets, leading to significant financial losses for traders.

In an interview, Singh highlighted that the protests sparked by Gandhi’s stance on the SIR matter have created a tense atmosphere not just in Delhi, but also in various states, cities, towns, and small markets. He appealed to Gandhi to consider postponing the protests in light of the upcoming festivals, allowing business activities to proceed normally.

Singh emphasized that this period is crucial for traders. Following Navratri, the festival season includes Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, which typically sees increased shopping activity. Traders prepare extensively for this time, and any anxiety among consumers regarding protests can directly affect sales.

He noted that when news of protests, traffic restrictions, or disruptions in transport services circulates through media, traders tend to avoid going to the markets, and customers are less likely to venture out to shop. Singh pointed out the impact of halted metro services in Delhi, train disruptions, and cancellations, stating that such conditions have far-reaching effects on commerce.

The reduced foot traffic in markets due to protests is already causing various sectors, including electronics and grocery businesses, to face potential losses running into millions. Singh commented that while it is difficult to assess the exact financial impact of the protests, the decline in customer numbers inevitably harms traders. He stressed that the situation is particularly concerning for businesses during this vital festive season.
