Gulmarg, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Tourists in Gulmarg are reveling in the season’s first snowfall, which occurred over the past 24 hours in several mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir. The weather department has also forecasted continued adverse weather conditions for the next day.
The Gulmarg ski resort received fresh snow, along with other high-altitude areas such as the Zojila Pass, Razdan Pass, and Sinthan Top. The snowfall on Tuesday left many visitors thrilled, with many expressing that they had never imagined witnessing such beauty and grandeur in Kashmir.
Some young tourists shared that it was their first experience seeing snow outside a cinema. Visitors were seen playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, and dancing, as the popular tourist destination was blanketed in a pristine layer of white.
According to the weather department, further precipitation is expected over the next 24 hours, but improvements in weather conditions are anticipated by the afternoon of October 15. The following ten days are expected to bring generally dry weather to the union territory.
Due to the snowfall in the mountains and rain in the plains, the maximum temperature in Srinagar dropped to 20 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded temperatures of 14.2 degrees and 11.8 degrees, respectively.
Farmers and apple producers have been advised to ensure the safe storage of harvested crops, as strong winds, rain, and snow are likely in higher altitudes until October 15. Travelers and tourists are also urged to exercise caution, and mountaineers are advised to avoid high-altitude treks until weather conditions improve. Locals have started wearing warmer clothing, with the traditional tweed “pheran” being particularly popular.
The rice harvest in the valley has been completed, and approximately 90 percent of the apple crop has also been gathered. Local farmers are now preparing to sow rabi crops, such as oilseeds, with the recent rains proving beneficial for their fields.
With the new snowfall in the mountains, an increase in water levels is expected in various springs, mountain streams, lakes, and wells, which will be crucial for the upcoming winter months.
