Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to Launch ₹3,108 Crore Chennai Water Pipeline Project
Tamil Nadus Chief Minister will inaugurate a major water pipeline project aimed at improving Chennais water supply network.

Chennai, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to lay the foundation stone for a significant water pipeline project in Sholinganallur on October 14. The ₹3,108.55 crore initiative aims to enhance Chennai’s drinking water supply network and facilitate water distribution during shortages.
The project will connect nine drinking water sources through a 98-kilometer network of iron pipelines. These sources include the Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram, and Chembarambakkam reservoirs, as well as desalination plants that cater to the city’s drinking water needs.
By integrating these sources into a common network, the scheme seeks to address a major flaw in the existing distribution system. Currently, the inability to easily redirect surplus water from one supply system to areas reliant on other sources hampers efficiency during shortages.
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board currently provides approximately 1,200 million liters of drinking water daily. Water is distributed through specially designed main pipelines, tailored to specific distribution areas. However, this segmented approach limits flexibility when certain sources experience shortages. Even if another facility has excess supply, the current infrastructure does not allow for easy redistribution to affected areas.
The proposed ring main will establish interconnections between sources, creating a network that can redistribute supply based on availability and demand. This aims to help the water board maintain a more uniform supply across Chennai during times of unequal water availability.
Originally developed by the previous DMK government, this plan addresses deficiencies in Greater Chennai’s drinking water infrastructure with an estimated cost of ₹3,108.55 crore. The upcoming inauguration marks a significant step forward for the current government in advancing this proposal.
The project’s significance lies in transforming the city’s existing water sources into a cohesive system. Currently, reservoirs and desalination plants deliver water to various parts of Chennai through separately designed pipelines, limiting the ability to adapt when supply from a single source decreases.
The ‘ring main’ is expected to provide the water board with greater operational flexibility in managing these supplies. This interconnected network will enable water to be redirected to areas facing shortages, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and reliable distribution of drinking water across the city’s supply zones.
