Kolkata, May 5: In the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has solidified its grip on the crucial Madhyamgram constituency in North 24 Parganas district. TMC candidate Rathin Ghosh triumphed over BJP’s Anindya Banerjee by a margin of 2,399 votes.
Ghosh secured 95,995 votes, while Banerjee received 93,596 votes. This election saw a remarkable voter turnout of 94.62%, significantly higher than in previous elections. The average voting rate across North 24 Parganas district was 92.92%.
Madhyamgram is part of the Kolkata Metropolitan area and falls under the Barasat Lok Sabha constituency. Established in 2011 after the 2008 delimitation, this seat has consistently been dominated by the TMC. Ghosh has recorded substantial victories in both the 2016 and 2021 elections, defeating BJP candidates in both instances.
At 68 years old, Rathin Ghosh is a 12th-grade graduate with no criminal record. His total assets are approximately ₹57.9 lakh. He has won this seat three consecutive times. In contrast, BJP candidate Anindya Banerjee, aged 57, is also a 12th-grade graduate but faces 12 criminal cases against him, with declared assets of ₹3.3 crore.
The BJP has posed a significant challenge this time by fielding Banerjee. Congress candidate Anant Ray, aged 72 and a graduate professional, has no criminal cases against him and his total assets are around ₹41.6 lakh.
Madhyamgram features a blend of urban and rural areas, with the Muslim community forming the largest voting bloc at approximately 27.60%, while Scheduled Caste voters account for about 12.78%. This demographic dynamic makes elections here particularly competitive.
The TMC’s strong local organization and welfare schemes continue to benefit the party. However, the BJP has been steadily increasing its vote share in recent years, making the contest more competitive than before. Meanwhile, Congress has struggled to maintain its position.
