TMC MP Sushmita Dev Resigns from Rajya Sabha and Party, Speculations Rise Over BJP Joining

Kolkata, June 10: Sushmita Dev, a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has resigned from both the upper house and her party membership. Following her resignation, she met with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, fueling speculation about her potential joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Dev is the second TMC leader to resign from the Rajya Sabha and the party this week.

Earlier, on June 8, senior TMC leader Sukendu Shekhar Roy also resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership and party affiliation. He stated that his decision was influenced by recent political developments in West Bengal and the public mandate. According to Roy, the people of the state have completely rejected the TMC due to issues such as corruption, crimes against women, and declines in education, health, industrial development, job creation, and law and order. This has led to growing discontent among the populace towards the TMC.

Sushmita Dev began her political career with the Congress party in Assam. She is the daughter of the late Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, who served as a central minister during the tenures of former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, and Dr. Manmohan Singh.

From 2014 to 2019, Sushmita Dev served as a Congress MP from the Bengali-majority Silchar constituency in Assam. However, she faced defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP’s Rajdeep Roy. Subsequently, in August 2021, she joined the TMC, where party chief Mamata Banerjee assigned her the responsibility of expanding the party’s organization in the northeastern states.

Sushmita Dev served two terms in the Rajya Sabha on behalf of the TMC. Her first term lasted from October 2021 to August 2023, and her second term began in April 2024. However, she resigned before completing her six-year term in the Rajya Sabha.
