TMC Block President Arrested in Cooch Behar Amid Violence Allegations

Kolkata, May 19: Police reported on Tuesday that a block president of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was arrested in Cooch Behar district of North Bengal on charges of violence and molestation.

The arrested individual, Abdul Kader, is the TMC president of the Cooch Behar I-B block. He was apprehended on Monday in the Guriyahti-II Gram Panchayat area and was presented in court the same afternoon.

According to police sources, Kader faces allegations of vandalism, robbery, and molestation in connection with complaints received prior to the West Bengal Assembly elections.

This marks the second high-profile arrest of a TMC block president in the region within a few days, indicating a significant crackdown on political violence following recent changes in the state administration.

Just days earlier, Shubhankar Dey, the TMC president of Cooch Behar Block II, was arrested in connection with an attack on the convoy of current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on August 5, 2025. Notably, this attack occurred while Adhikari was leading a protest rally in Cooch Behar last August.

The arrests of two TMC block presidents in Cooch Behar have sparked intense debate in political circles. Since the BJP took power in the state, there has been a concerted effort to clamp down on the illegal and criminal activities of TMC leaders. The police have been active in taking action against anti-social elements, frequently targeting TMC leaders accused of breaking the law.

Recently, TMC councilor Shantanu Majumdar, also known as ‘Mejo’, from the Baranagar municipality in North 24 Parganas was arrested for extortion. He represents Ward No. 14 in Baranagar. On May 9, police arrested TMC councilor Bhishmadev Karmakar in Murshidabad district for allegedly obstructing Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury’s election campaign.

On May 6, a TMC councilor in Hooghly’s Shrirampur was arrested for allegedly punching a police officer and breaking his nose. However, TMC councilor Rajesh Shah, also known as Kukua, claimed that the action against him was politically motivated.

On May 5, TMC councilor Amirul Sheikh Islam was arrested again under the Arms Act. He represents Ward No. 14 in the Pujali municipality of Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas.
