Ujjain, August 25: On the auspicious occasion of Shravana Shukla Paksha Dwadashi, a grand Bhasma Aarti was held at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple. Many devotees flocked to witness this divine event on Tuesday morning.
Early Tuesday, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees got a glimpse of Baba Mahakal after the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, amidst the chanting of mantras, Lord Mahakal was bathed with Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. During the worship of Baba Mahakal, the first bell was rung, and water was offered with the invocation of “Hari Om.” After the camphor Aarti, Baba adorned a crown. Subsequently, the Bhasma Aarti was performed with the sounds of cymbals, drums, and conch shells. Lord Mahakal was beautifully adorned with a silver trident, Tripund, and dry fruits.
The temple priest conducted the Maha Aarti, and a large number of devotees witnessed the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many devotees had queued up since the previous night to have a glimpse of their revered deity. It is customary for men to wear traditional dhoti and women to wear sarees during the Bhasma Aarti.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal manifests from the formless to the form. Many devotees travel to the holy city of Ujjain to participate in this sacred Aarti.
