Thai Woman Arrested in Kolkata Spa for Illegal Stay in India

Kolkata, August 3: A Thai woman has been arrested at a spa in Kolkata for residing in India without valid documents. The Kolkata police announced the arrest on Monday, stating that the woman was taken into custody from a spa located in South Kolkata.

This arrest is part of an ongoing campaign to identify foreign nationals allegedly living in the country illegally. Authorities conducted a raid at the spa on Sunday, during which the woman was apprehended. A police officer commented, “We are investigating the entire matter. Further information will be shared later.”

During questioning, the Thai woman was unable to present valid documents. Upon reviewing her passport and visa records, police discovered that her Thai passport expired in 2025, while her Indian tourist visa had lapsed on February 27, 2021. Despite the expiration of both documents, she reportedly remained in the country without the necessary legal permissions.

Officials noted that the central government recently reiterated that foreign nationals without valid visas or other required documents would not be permitted to stay in India. Following these directives, police have intensified surveillance in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal to identify illegally residing foreign nationals.

A special team has been formed to conduct regular inspections and document verifications at hotels, guest houses, spas, rental homes, and other locations. Investigators are now trying to determine how the Thai national managed to stay in India for such an extended period, where she was residing, who her contacts were, and whether she had any links to an organized network.

Central agencies have also been informed about the arrest. The woman is set to be presented before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Kolkata. Until the completion of legal proceedings, she is being held at the Tollygunge Women’s Police Station.
